Derrick Pickering, FNP C, CNM, is a dedicated healthcare provider known for compassionate, comprehensive care, especially in women’s health. His professional path reflects both personal resilience and a commitment to clinical excellence. Through years of education, hands-on training, and lived experience, he has built a practice centered on listening, respect, and evidence-based treatment.

Early Inspiration and Professional Beginnings

Derrick was born in Utah and developed an interest in medicine after experiencing illness as a child. The nurses who supported him during that time demonstrated the impact of attentive and compassionate care. Their example inspired him to pursue nursing as a way to serve others with understanding and professionalism.

From an early stage, he understood the importance of trust in healthcare. Those formative experiences shaped his desire to become a provider who values patient concerns and encourages open communication. His decision to enter nursing was grounded in gratitude and a sincere wish to support individuals and families during vulnerable moments.

Academic Excellence and Specialization

Pickering earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Brigham Young University Idaho, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.92. He later completed a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Brigham Young University, Provo, graduating with a GPA of 3.9 in August 2014. These academic accomplishments demonstrate consistent discipline and dedication to high standards in nursing education.

While completing advanced training, he worked in pediatrics for nearly five years. Caring for children and their families strengthened his clinical judgment and reinforced the empathy he developed from his own childhood health experiences. His time in pediatrics also deepened his understanding of preventive care and long-term wellness.

His professional direction was further shaped by personal family experiences involving infertility, infant loss, and pregnancy complications. These events encouraged him to expand his expertise in women’s health. In May 2022, he earned a postgraduate certificate as a Certified Nurse-Midwife from Frontier Nursing University, broadening his ability to provide comprehensive reproductive and maternal care.

Professional Milestones and Accomplishments

Derrick Pickering is dual board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife. This dual certification enables him to deliver primary care alongside specialized obstetric and gynecologic services. His qualifications reflect a strong commitment to meeting the diverse healthcare needs of women and families.

Since March 2021, he has served as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner at Sunrise Women’s Health in Mapleton, UT. In this role, he founded a clinic dedicated to comprehensive healthcare services for women of all ages. His evidence-based approach supports care in primary care, hormone replacement therapy, help with menopause, gynecological services, infertility, midwifery, contraception, and lab assessments. He prioritizes listening carefully to each patient, identifying their care goals, and engaging in shared decision-making to help achieve meaningful outcomes.

Earlier in his training, he worked as a Student Nurse-Midwife at Wellsprings Women’s Care in Tooele, UT, and at Bella Women’s Care in Phoenix, AZ. Under professional supervision, he performed obstetric and gynecological exams, assisted with labor management and births, and provided postpartum care. These experiences prepared him for independent practice and strengthened his confidence in delivering safe and respectful maternity care.

Commitment to Education and Community

Pickering values continued learning and professional engagement. In 2019, he presented on “The Effectiveness of Psychopharmacotherapy” at the UVU Conference on Suicide Prevention. By contributing to educational events, he supports informed discussion within the healthcare community and encourages evidence-based practice across disciplines.

Personal Life and Interests

Derrick has been married to Stephanie Pickering for over 17 years. Together, they have three living children, including one with special needs. They also experienced the loss of twins who were born prematurely and passed away. These personal challenges have strengthened his compassion and deepened his understanding of the emotional aspects of family-centered care.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, he enjoys scuba diving, vacationing, and spending time with his family. Camping and hiking allow him to reconnect with nature and maintain balance. These activities reflect his appreciation for time with loved ones and the importance of maintaining personal well-being.

Derrick Pickering continues to serve patients with humility, clinical expertise, and a strong commitment to women’s health. His dual board certification, academic achievements, and lived experiences shape a practice grounded in empathy and evidence-based care. Through thoughtful listening and shared decision-making, he remains focused on positively impacting the lives of the individuals and families he serves.
